substitute for leather shoes, because leather is
considered impure.

Muria Wooden Combs

This tribe has always considered creativity with one’s hands a prized virtue. Boys carve these combs for their girlfriends. The more combs a girl has the higher her status. When a girl marries she is supposed to return all the combs from her suitors, only keeping the ones gifted by her husband.

Jain Monk Paatra Bowls

There are but a few Muslim craftsmen who continue to employ their traditional skills to form Paatra, the lightweight bowls, carried by the monks of the Shwetambar Jain and Vaishnav sect. Each set is made from one piece of wood so vary in numbers from 6 – 9. Plates and cups are also made.
