This tribe has always considered creativity with one’s hands a prized virtue. Boys carve these combs for their girlfriends. The more combs a girl has the higher her status. When a girl marries she is supposed to return all the combs from her suitors, only keeping the ones gifted by her husband.

Coiling is a basketry technique used by rural women in eastern Uttar Pradesh to make objects for use in the kitchen. They are made from Moonj and Rara grasses that grow wild in the wastelands. They are so tightly coiled that they are almost waterproof. Baskets are made by a mother for her daughter’s wedding.
