Jain Bowls
These exquisitely refined sets of Jain monk bowls are hand-lathed in Rajasthan by the Kharadi muslims for use by the Shwetamber sect of Jain monks. The white robed monks renounce all worldly possessions and in a journey of humility travel by foot with their bowls seeking followers who fill them with food. The beauty of each concentric set is that from one section of wood emerge a total of three to ten bowls, each scooped out from the heart of the bowl before it. These bowls called “bhiksha patra” are lathed from local rohida wood prized for its dense grain and strength.
