Chikan is a traditional embroidery style
from Lucknow, India. The word is derived
from the Persian chikin or chakin meaning
embroidery.
Chikan began as a type of white-on-white
(or whitework) embroidery. Traditionally,
white threads were used on semi-transparent
muslin cloth. A single piece relies on many
skilled craftsmen- designer, printer,
embroiderer and washerman. With changing
demands and fashions, chikankari is now also
being done on a variety of plain and patterned
fabrics of varying colours.
